Human papilloma virus and cervical cancer are directly linked, and is initial detected in an ASCUS pap smear.
It induces the growth of abnormal cells that can become malignant. This sexually transmitted disease is the main cause of serious disease. In many women, infection with certain types of HPV is the first step in the progression from a normal cervix to malignant cervical tissue.

It usually takes many years for serious disease of the cervix to develop. Without treatment severely dysplastic cells penetrate deeper layers of the cervix and spread to other organs, causing invasive form of the disease. The condition is unlikely to progress in women who don’t smoke or have other risk factors.
